A green herbal home fragrance oil that smells like what is growing, not what has been cut. Clover, bergamot and lemon over nasturtium, orchid and jasmine, with vetiver, amber wood and musk underneath.

Description

Clover, bergamot and lemon — The Luck is a green herbal home fragrance oil that smells like what is actually growing in a garden, rather than what has been cut and arranged in a vase. Oil No. 12, and the greenest thing we make.

What The Luck smells like

Clover is the note that makes it. It is grassy and faintly honeyed at the same time, and it sits underneath the bergamot and lemon rather than behind them, so the citrus never feels like the point of the fragrance.

Nasturtium, orchid and jasmine follow. Nasturtium is the interesting one — peppery, green, a little bitter, the smell of a leaf rather than a flower — and it keeps the orchid and jasmine from tipping the middle into anything too pretty. What you get is a garden in the middle of the day, not a bouquet.

Vetiver, amber wood and musk finish it. Vetiver brings a dry, rooty quality that stops the whole thing feeling raw, amber wood adds a little warmth, and the musk carries it on for another hour or two after the green has faded.

The notes

Top: clover, bergamot, lemon
Heart: nasturtium, orchid, jasmine
Base: vetiver, amber wood, musk

Everything in the same family sits on our Garden Green & Herbal page, and clover, nasturtium and vetiver can each be looked up in the Scent Index.

Where to use this green herbal home fragrance oil

Hallways, kitchens and conservatories. It is the green herbal home fragrance oil we would put in a conservatory before any other — real plants and a green fragrance reinforce each other, and the vetiver base gives it enough weight not to disappear in a warm glass room.

Kitchens suit it because clover and citrus deal with cooking smells without leaving anything sweet in the air afterwards. In a hallway it does the same job as an open back door: the room reads as aired out rather than scented.

Is The Luck right for you?

Choose it if you want green without sharpness. There is no mint here and no pine — the clover and nasturtium do something softer and more natural than that, and it is an easy fragrance to live with in spring and summer.

Look elsewhere if you want something colder and more bracing. The Kupa is the one for that: green fruit, mint and lemon up top with cypress and oakmoss underneath, considerably more assertive and better in a large space. If you want green at the lowest possible volume, The Hills is four notes of orange, lemon, green tea and white musk, and it is the better desk fragrance of the two.

It is also a reasonable choice for anyone who finds floral oils cloying. The flowers here are green ones, and the vetiver keeps them honest.

How to use it

This is a concentrated fragrance oil for cold-air diffusion — not a reed diffuser, not a candle, not a wax burner. Three drops in The Wisp Mini covers a kitchen or a hallway. For a conservatory or an open-plan ground floor, the Wisp Fragrance System is the better fit, because green notes need air movement to read properly.

The 10ml bottle fits the Neom Pod Mini, and a few drops on a Wisp Aroma Stone will scent a car or a cupboard with no power at all.

Good to know

Hand-bottled in Nottingham in 10ml, 50ml and 125ml. A 50ml bottle lasts roughly thirty days at standard use. Vegan and never tested on animals. Free UK delivery on orders over £60, dispatched within one to two working days.

Seasonal advice: run it from March through September. In deep winter a green herbal home fragrance oil can feel out of step with the room, and a woody or spiced oil will serve you better until the light comes back.
